Outboard, site-specific video installation Outboard was installed in and on the Main Gallery of the Lamar Dodd School of Art in Athens, Georgia. The core of the installation is a digital animation, aligned with an eight-foot sculptural element on the roof of the gallery, visible from the surrounding environment. The animation contains a playful narrative that recalls cartoon graphics and 30-second television spots. Representations of song, flight, and location recombine in a variation of the "Jolly Roger", set off by a knowing wink. The miniature scale of the video interface is intensified by the dramatic height of the gallery and uses the glowing screen to offset its otherwise minimal presence. The rooftop element functions as an extension of the gallery into public space, positioning a still frame from the animation in the realm of collective viewership and interpretation. Considered as a whole, Outboard seeks to locate the school as a place of cultural production, where individual expression is made visible. |
