Cameo
1999
Cameo is an apparition, a play of light moving to the rhythm of a hand-held camera. Its secret is revealed in the story of its construction; the image was appropriated from a found snapshot of unknown origin, depicting statuary framed by a polychromed, buttressed arch. Scanned, reframed, then enlarged to poster dimensions, the twins and their rainbow were observed through a video camera for an hour. Finally, the footage of that observation was projected upon its source, the digital print. The images seem to shift on the same plane, meeting in moments of intensified saturation. The title refers to both usages of the word "cameo," a relief cut in contrasting layers and a brief filmic appearance.
